How to Apply for an Apartment
Step 1: Search for Available Apartments
Use our searchable portfolio (above) to find out if we have a home that’s right for you. You can search units by location, type, size, and amenities. Eligibilities and rents are not available online.
Step 2: Verify which Properties are Accepting Applications by Contacting a Property Manager
Due to a long wait list, NWNH now only accepts applications for properties that have vacancies. To find out if a property is available, check our property database and reach out to one of our Property Managers. Contact information is available on our Property Management (link to call out) page, as well as on each property listing in our portfolio. You may also visit Property Managers during on-site office hours at many of our developments, which are listed in the box to the right (or below on mobile devices).
Step 3: Submit a Rental Application
The rental application is available for download below, or can be picked up at the site offices listed above, or at our main office located at 235 Grand Ave in New Haven, CT. You may submit your rental application in person at the above locations, or email it to the property manager of the site you are interested in. Remember to confirm that a property is available before submitting your application (see step 2). We are unable to accept applications for properties that have no vacancies.
Step 4: Receive a Follow-Up Call from Us
We will follow up with your submitted application, usually within 5 business days of receipt. At that time, you will find out if you meet the basic eligibility requirements for the unit(s) you are interested in. If you qualify, the property manager will set up an appointment with you for your rental interview.
Step 5: Meet us and Provide Supplemental Documentation
At this phase, you will be scheduled to have an interview with a property manager and will need to bring in documentation to verify your identity, income, and credit score. There is an application fee due at the interview which covers the cost of credit checks. The fee is $40 for the first adult, and $25 for each additional household member over 18.
Step 6: Receive Determination of Approval
The property manager will review all your supplemental documentation for accuracy, verify with third party sources, and determine if you fall between the minimum and maximum income required for the unit for which you are applying. Once a property manager determines if you qualify, you will receive a call from us.
Step 7: Security Deposit
If you have been approved as eligible for the unit you are applying for, you will be offered the apartment. If you accept, you will sign a lease and provide the security deposit for the apartment. A sample lease is provided for your reference.
Step 8: Move In & Join the Community!
As a resident, you are part of the NeighborWorks New Horizons family. We offer various services free for all residents, including financial literacy coaching, afterschool and summer youth programs, and homeownership counseling. Many sites have resident leadership councils, where you can take a leadership role in your new home. Check out our Classes & Services to learn more.
