The Linden Place Project is a 44-unit, new construction development located in the Historic Hillside Neighborhood of Waterbury, Connecticut. The Historic Hillside Neighborhood is listed on the National and State Register of Historic places and comprises approximately 300 historically significant dwellings that feature 19th and early 20th century Queen Anne, Arts & Crafts Victorian and Tudor architecture styles.
Development of Linden Grove consisted of the demolition of a blighted, former, office building, a vacant, multi-family home, and three, vacant lots. Two buildings have been newly constructed. There are 26 units at 79 Linden Street and, across the street, 18 units at 80 Linden Street. These units are being leased to mixed-income, individual and family households earning between 25 and 100% of the Area Median Income. In total, the property consists of eleven one-bedroom units, 27 two-bedroom units, and six three-bedroom units.
Linden Place is located two blocks from the City Center and, as such, is in close proximity to the retail, commercial and cultural center of Waterbury. Much of the city’s employment, shopping, services, resources and dining are an easy walk or short drive from the project area. Healthcare and religious needs are also well provided for with St. Mary’s hospital and numerous churches within walking distance.
As an urban development, Linden Place will also be serviced well by public transportation. Bus routes are in close proximity and link commuters to all points of the compass both locally and regionally. Regional and interstate transportation needs are provided for by Metro North Railroad Commuter Service which is within a short distance of the development site. Metro North provides links to points north and south along the East Coast.
The benefits of the development of Linden reach well beyond the boundaries of the street. In strengthening access between Historic Hillside District and the Central Business District, residents of Hillside benefit from increased walkable access to downtown services and amenities, while the Central Business District benefits from an increase in traffic, clients, and customers from its nearby neighborhood. This serves to stabilize both the neighborhood and the Central Business District, thus making Hillside a more viable option for further investment.
